Paula Assubuji is a feminist economist and activist in South Africa who works as country director for the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Cambodia.
At the Heinrich Böll Foundation Southern Africa, she is responsible for coordinating the program “Human Rights and Political Rights” since 2008, emphasizing gender democracy.
She started her work with women in the 1980s at the Frauen Anstiftung in Germany, facilitating feministic programs on the international level. Since then, she focuses on gender issues and empowering women in all of her work.
Prior to joining the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Paula was the director of Operations for One World and led the secretariat of Shack Dwellers International (South Africa).
Paula’s experience there and in other developmental organizations in Germany and Mozambique led skills to engage at all organization levels and manage teams from diverse cultural backgrounds. Furthermore, she acquired expertise on socio-economic issues through years of working in the development sector in Southern Africa and and Europe using community based and community-driven approaches.
